WHAT IS A LANGUAGE DISORDER?

A language disorder is difficulty with expressive communication, comprehension, nonverbal communication, and / or social communication.   

WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A LANGUAGE DISORDER?

Children with a language disorder may have difficulties with any or all of the following:

Receptive language disorder: difficulty following directions, understanding others and / or answering questions

Expressive language disorder: limited vocabulary, difficulty with word retrieval, and / or using grammar correctly

Pragmatic language disorder: decreased eye contact, difficulty maintaining a conversation, and / or difficulty understanding social cues

The cause of a language disorder is often unknown; however some known causes include the following:

  • Hearing loss
  • Cognitive disability
  • Brain damage
  • Autism
  • Emotional disturbance
  • Poor environment

OUR APPROACH AT KEY THERAPIES:

We will develop an individualized treatment plan for each child based off of his / her current needs.  We will work on improving language skills by utilizing techniques and strategies that will be taught to caregivers so that follow-through can be completed at home.
